Arizona State football star Davon Durant found himself in serious trouble after cops say he beat up and choked his girlfriend in Arizona earlier this month. But now the girlfriend is changing her tune, claiming the alleged bruise is just a hickey.
Davon Durant — a junior college transfer who was projected to be a starting linebacker for the Sun Devils and their most highly touted defensive recruit — was arrested for felony aggravated assault after a witness reported seeing “a male hit a female.”
Cops responded to the scene where the woman told police she was having an argument with Durant in a black Chevy Tahoe — when he demanded that she escort him up to her apartment so he could get his stuff (it sounds like they were breaking up.)
The woman says she refused to let him inside and he freaked out — “hit her one time in the face and then grabbed her around the neck.”
The woman says Durant squeezed her neck and impeded her ability to breathe.
Cops say the woman had bruises and marks consistent with an attack — so they arrested Durant. He was hauled off to a nearby jail and is due back in court later this month.
Now the girlfriend is adamant that Durant never laid a hand on her. She tells TMZ Sports, she and Durant got a little loud during an argument prompting someone to call police. She insists she did not suffer any injuries during the dispute.
As for her claims to the police that he grabbed her around the neck, she now says she was just being “dramatic” at the time and was too embarrassed to tell police the mark on her neck was a hickey and the eye “injury” was just an irritation from crying.
Prosecutors can still take Durant to trial without the girlfriend’s cooperation but it would make it more difficult to convict him.
ASU has suspended Durant indefinitely.
It sounds like there was an incident but they’ve gotten back together and now they want to make it disappear. This is very common.
