This device will be initially placed in Japan, alongside a government owned insurance called Japan Post, to see how it will do. According to Apple, the iPad is the best selling tablet in Japan, so it’s projected to make a positive impact. Japan Post will deliver these iPads to homes of elderly people and assist them setting it up and learning how to use it.

“Together the three of us and our teams will dramatically improve the lives of millions of people, and that at the end of the day is what it’s all about,” Cook said.

The new apps are built and powered by IBM. The apps use the machine-learning computer system Watson in order to keep track of the lifestyle of the elderly. The apps have large ‘easy to read’ buttons, adjustable settings for vision and hearing impaired users. The apps built my IBM are through the template of the apps Apple already have. For example, Siri would be able to read emails and websites.

Japan Post CEO Taizo Nishimuro says hopefully they would be able to deliver this product to 5 million families within the next five years.
