Following President Obama’s use of the the n-word – while discussing the current existence of racism – during his stop by Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, conversation has been sparked about the word, and has added to Cornel West’s use of a ‘this century’ term; a term in which he used, and heavily during his stop by CNN on Monday.

“Too many black people are ni**erized. I would say the first Black President has become the first ni**erized Black President,” says the philosopher and activist. West has coined a phrase that some may take offense to, however, he’s not too worried the reactions.

Mr. West’s definition on ‘niggerization’:

“I call it the niggerization of a people, not just black people, because America been niggerized since 9/11. When you’re niggerized, you’re unsafe, unprotected, subject to random violence, hated for who you are. You become so scared that you defer to the powers that be, and you’re willing to consent to your own domination. And that’s the history of black people in America. That’s the history of black people in America.”

On CNN, West explains, “You can’t talk about wealth and inequality, you can’t talk about education, you can’t talk about massive unemployment and under employment and you can’t talk about drones being dropped on people in other parts of the world without talking about White supremacy and its ways in which it operates.” He adds. “But too many Black people are niggerized.”

When CNN’s Poppy Harlow asked West what he meant by the statement, West continues, “A niggerized black person is a black person who is afraid and scared and intimidated when it comes to putting a spotlight on White supremacy and fighting against white supremacy.”

At this point, who is afraid to speak about white supremacy? I believe people are more open to the topic, however, it’s up to each individual to know what it means first.
