Before the FDA Advisory Board backed ‘the little pink pill’ it was shot down twice by the FDA. Today however, Addyi (flibanserin) referred to as the “female Viagra”—has been approved.

Addyi, although being called ‘female Viagra’ works differently than Viagra for men. The drug is used to treat premenopausal women whom have low sex drives. The drug focuses on the central nervous system and increases sex drive, whereas Viagra for men focuses on erectile dysfunction.

The director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Janet Woodcock, M.D.said, “The FDA strives to protect and advance the health of women, and we are committed to supporting the development of safe and effective treatments for female sexual dysfunction.”

Like any drug, Addyi has side effects, which include, severe low blood pressure and loss of consciousness, especially those who drink alcohol while on the drug. According to clinical trials women experienced a 37% increase in sexual desire. Addyi will be available in October.
