Recent JAMA Psychiatry study revealed that American adult marijuana use doubled between 2001 and 2013. The adult pot smoking population jumped from about 5% to about 10%. Hit the jump to find out who increased their smoking the most.

Women, hispanic people, African Americans, Southerners, and people middle-aged and older proportionally increased the most. 23 states now have medical marijuana laws, and 4 have recreational laws for the substance.

There is still heavy debate about the benefits and adversities marijuana presents. Some studies suggest that smoking pot can lead to mental health diseases. However, other studies conclude that smoking pot does not lead to consequences later in life.

The increase in use can be traced to the fact that marijuana is now legally available to some Americans. Over half the U.S. population now supports legalizing marijuana. As more people try it and include marijuana in their lives, more facts will become prevalent about its effects.
