On New Year’s day, it was reported that legendary singer Natalie Cole had died at the age of 65. Friday (January 8th) we learn that the ‘Unforgettable’ singer died from complications stemming from idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension, leading to heart failure.

Cole’s family released a statement to the AP, explaining she had kidney surgery back in 2009 and was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension. This disease effects the lungs and causes shortness of breath, dizziness, and chest pain.

Natalie Cole’s family stated:

“(Cole) responded well to pulmonary arterial hypertension-specific agents over many years, during which she performed many concerts world-wide, but eventually succumbed to intractable right heart failure, an outcome that unfortunately commonly occurs in this progressive disorder.”
