Mayor de Blasio has recently signed a bill that will give him the opportunity to rename 42 streets and places in the five boroughs. Two of those streets will be named in the honor of Hip-Hop’s birthday and also a Brooklyn MC ‘Pumpkinhead.’

On Aug. 11 1973, there was a back to school party thrown by DJ Kool Herc in the Bronx. This party is very important as people know it as the beginning of Hip-Hop. The party was $.25 for ladies and $.50 for guys! Waaaaaaaaay cheaper than the parties we have today!

Carol “Firsty Lady of Hip Hop” Campbell, and Afika Bambaataa was in attendance for the renaming of the street. De Blasio says,

“If you have friends on the West Coast, remember to tell them it all started here, okay? Just remind them of that fact.”

The MC Pumpkinhead died after complications following a surgery. The street will be named Robert PH Diaz Way.
