During Tuesday night’s loss at home to the Blazers, Carmelo Anthony somewhat got into it with a fan who was sitting close to the Knicks bench. According to Melo there was no cursing or hostility during the interaction but he still felt the desire to shout back to the fan. He essentially told the fan to stop complaining about the team losing and go talk to the owner about it, whom Melo gestured towards. It doesn’t seem like it was much more than that but the team seemingly forced Melo to apologize, although from the sounds of it he never actually apologized for anything, nor should he.

“I don’t really think I said anything wrong,” he said. “The guy said he wasn’t coming to any more games. I said, ‘Why are you talking to me about it, the owner’s right there. You should discuss that with him. Don’t yell my name out and talk to me about that. Talk to the owner about that.’

“It wasn’t no hostility. He said what he had to say. I said what I had to say. That was that. I didn’t say anything else. Wasn’t no curse words.”

Anthony said he spoke to Madison Square Garden executive chairman James Dolan after the incident, and Anthony said Dolan wanted him to release a statement.

“It was Mr. Dolan’s decision,” Anthony said.

“It’s really not that serious to me,” he added. “It was just one of those moments when you’re getting booed, the team’s getting booed, you’re not playing well. The fan is sitting right there behind the bench. You catch what he’s saying. He’s trying to get your attention. I said what I said. I don’t think I said anything wrong.”

The Knicks tweeted out an apology on behalf of Melo but interestingly enough, he never tweeted it or spoke it himself, giving more credence to the idea that it was being forced upon him.

“We are all frustrated by the team’s recent results—everyone, including me, my teammates, coaches and the fans. Last night, a fan and I let those frustrations get the best of us. I should not have responded the way I did.”

He also skipped the Knicks annual big charity bowling event the following night and reports were saying he was bothered by how things transpired with the apology situation. At the end of the day he really had nothing to apologize for. Sometimes idiot fans need to be checked but then again that’s exactly what they want.
