New York Jets rookie Geno Smith decided not to show up to Mark Sanchez’s annual Jets West practice sessions although he was invited.  The no-show raised plenty of eyebrows considering Smith is not only a rookie who didn’t join the rest of the team but he and Sanchez are still competing for the starting quarterback position.  Sanchez responded to Smith being MIA.  Read more after the jump.

Sanchez pointed out that other Jets quarterbacks have come to his sessions before and this is the first time he was the only one.

“We’ve had other quarterbacks; this is the first year we haven’t had other quarterbacks,” Sanchez said. “Greg McElroy’s been here before, (Matt) Simms was here last year, Tim Tebow, who you might have heard of, has been here, Mark Brunell has been here, Kevin O’Connell has been here.

“If Geno comes or doesn’t come, it is not a big deal. I don’t hold it against anybody who’s not here. Some guys are getting married, some guys are going on vacation, some guys are doing stuff, so it’s totally optional. And it’s a big sacrifice — you got to leave your family, you got to leave what you’re doing, wherever you’re from. So I totally understand, it’s not a big deal.”

Sanchez told Beisner he is “absolutely” the starting quarterback of the Jets and will continue to be the starter.
