A six-year-old girl from Ohio was the victim of a very unfortunate event. After her first day in the first grade, Shyanna Gretz’s mother was told by the school’s administrators that her daughter could not return to class. Find out why after the jump.

The cause for Shyanna’s removal for class is because of her service dog. Shyanna happens to be autistic and requires the dog to help her with her daily routine. Unfortunately, her current first-grade teacher is severely allergic to pet dander. So, after the first day, administrators suggested that young Shyanna transfer schools a few miles away where the teacher isn’t allergic.

Despite the alternative, Charla Gretz –Shyanna’s mother– was furious. She told an interviewer, “I believe that Shyanna needs to be in school, she needs to be around her peers. That is part of her autism and part of her disability. Kids with autism do no do well with change. These kids thrive on routine. We’ve been setting her up for a good 11 to 12 months to go to Morrison Elementary School and now they’re telling her that she can’t go there.”

With a legitimate argument, the school district has no other option. While respecting Shyanna’s right to an education, they aren’t able to force the teacher around pet dander given the severity of her allergies.
