Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson will star in the return of the broadway play ‘The Color Purple’. The broadway play ‘The Color Purple’ will begin in London. The story of ‘The Color Purple’ is set in rural Georgia as it follows the life of Celie, through her trials of adversity and love.

The singer will play the role of Shug Avery in the play. The character of Shug Avery, is a blues singer who befriends the play’s main character Celie, who’s casting has yet to be announced. Jennifer Hudson playing the role of Shug Avery could put her in line for winning a Tony award. The new ‘The Color Purple’ production, can be seen at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London. The play is an adaptation of the Alice Walker novel and it played 910 regular performances on Broadway from 2005 through early 2008. It will be directed by John Doyle, Scott Sanders, Oprah Winfrey and Roy Furman, who produced the first show that ended seven years ago. John Doyle, received a director’s Tony in 2006 for his own Broadway debut, “Sweeney Todd.” Music and lyrics are by Grammy winners Allee Willis, Brenda Russell, and Stephen Bray.

Jennifer Hudson will make her Broadway debut this fall. ‘The Color Purple’ is Hudson’s first musical theater role since her winning an award in 2006 for the film “Dreamgirls.” Additional casting of the broadway cast will soon be announced.
