Cutting ties with Randy Moss almost cost Vikings coach Brad Childress his job.

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf was so irate with the handling of Moss’ dismissal that he delayed Moss’ placement on waivers so he could weigh firing Childress and retaining Moss, a team source said Friday.

Moss was placed on waivers Tuesday just four games after Minnesota acquired the mercurial wideout in a midseason trade with New England.

Childress informed the team of the decision to waive Moss on Monday at a team meeting.

According to a source, Wilf arrived in Minnesota on Monday, where he observed practice and met individually with key players to gain a sense of how the team was responding to the crisis.
