After compiling a 4-1 record and a 0.92 ERA through the month of July, Yankees ace CC Sabathia was named the American League Pitcher of the Month.

Sabathia struck out 50 hitters in the month, walking 13 and tossing two complete games over 39 innings on his way to earning his second career AL Pitcher of the Month award (August 2009).

He led the Majors in strikeouts, ERA and opponents’ batting average (.140) after starting the month by striking out 11 over seven innings in a 9-2 win against the Indians on July 5.

The 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner then outdid Rays hurler James Shields in his next start, earning the victory in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel.

Sabathia did not allow a run again until July 16, in the first inning against the Blue Jays, snapping a career-best 24-inning scoreless streak. It was the longest shutout streak by a Yankees pitcher since Tom Underwood threw 24 2/3 straight frames of shutout ball in 1980.

Over his last 15 starts since May 19, Sabathia is 13-2 with a 2.08 ERA, 112 strikeouts and 24 walks. He has gone at least seven innings in 14 of those outings.

He leads the Majors with 16 wins this year and is second in the AL with 176 2/3 innings pitched.
