Yankees clinched 15th playoff berth in last 16 seasons with win over Blue Jays

The Yankees clinched their 15th postseason berth in the last 16 years and CC Sabathia got his 21st win of the season, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 on Tuesday night. “It’s just a first step,” first basemanMark Teixeira said. “No one in here is satisfied with this season. Everyone knows it’s World Series championship or bust.” Derek Jeter scored three runs and drove in another for the Yankees, who have reached the postseason every year but one since 1995. New York missed the playoffs in 2008, finishing behind Tampa Bay and Boston.


Bob Dupuy resigned as MLB President and COO, effective Oct. 31st

Posted by Sabrina B. @gametimegirl NEW YORK — Bob DuPuy resigned Tuesday as Major League Baseball’s chief operating officer following 8 1/2 years as commissioner Bud Selig’s top aide. The move is effective Oct. 31, and Selig doesn’t currently intend to replace him. DuPuy was Selig’s outside lawyer when he became executive vice president for administration in 1998. He was promoted to president in March 2002 and replaced Paul Beeston. Relations between Selig and DuPuy have become strained in recent years. DuPuy declined to comment on his situation this week.


Raiders Legend George Blanda Dies at Age 83

Former Raider quarterback George Blanda, whose passing and kicking exploits during a 26-year NFL career led him to a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has died. He was 83.


Rangers clinch AL West title after 11 year drought!

Across the room, Bengie Molina and Vladimir Guerrero danced to Latin music blaring from nearby stereo speakers. Cigars were lit and the sweet smell of celebration wafted through the air. Michael Young and the Rangers became the second team to clinch a spot in the postseason with a 4-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, setting off a nearly hour-long party that began on the field shortly after rookie closer Neftali Felix retired Cliff Pennington(notes) for the final out.


Uber-Jets fan Fireman Ed charged with assault for pre-season scuffle at the New Meadowlands Stadium

The uber-Jets fan was charged with assault in an East Rutherford, N.J., court for his Aug. 16 scuffle with a Giants fan at the pre-season opener of the New Meadowlands Stadium. Ed Anzalone – renowned for leading the “J-E-T-S! Jets, Jets, Jets!” chant – wound up bumping into Giants fan Christopher Black. The incident, which is now a YouTube favorite, occurred in the first quarter of the Giants-Jets exhibition game.


Roy Halladay earns 20th win for Phillies

He knows the bubbly will taste even sweeter when he gets to the postseason for the first time. Halladay became Philadelphia’s first 20-game winner in 28 years, Jayson Werth  hit a three-run homer and the Phillies increased their lead in the NL East to five games with their ninth straight win, 5-3 over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night.
