Fourteen years after the death of rap icon Big Pun, an ambitious fan, Shane Rossi took it upon himself to rename the Bronx’s E. 163rd St. and Longwood Ave, Big Pun Place. The Department of Transportation was not allowing that. Less than a week later, the sign was removed. It was good while it lasted. At least Rossi was able to get his message out. N.O.R.E., Ja Rule and the late Big Pun’s son Chris Rivers were all featured in Cipha Sounds’ Hip Hop Improv Show “Take It Personal” this past Friday night, paying tribute to Pun as we celebrated his life on the anniversary of his passing. Cause Latins going platinum was destined to come! In February of 2010, the Bronx Community Board ruled to deny any type of street dedication to the legendary rapper Big Pun due to his “violent” lyrics and “constant drug references.” However, just a few days after the 14th anniversary of his death on February 7th, a few BX residents took it upon themselves to create their own street dedicated to the late Christopher Rios on 163rd street and Rodgers place in the Bronx. The “Big Pun Place” street sign was put up on the same corner of Pun’s huge mural. Check it out below.
