NFL: Chris Borland Giving Back Over $400K of His Signing Bonus After Announcing Retirement

Chris Borland definitely shook up the NFL last week when he announced his retirement after playing just one season with the San Francisco 49ers.  Borland said it was due to fear of future brain injuries and he consulted with family members, concussion researchers, friends and current and former teammates, as well as studying what is known about the relationship between football and neurodegenerative disease.

There’s been a lot going on in the NFL, with the lawsuits and more research done suggesting the devastating effects (CTE) playing football can have.  While the players love what they do, some are also scared about the future and the possible loss of cognition they’ll face later on in life.  The San Francisco 49ers got hit yet again.  After the shocking retirement of Patrick Willis, now 24-year old 49ers linebacker Chris Borland will retire from the NFL after just one season.
