Welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. plans to fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 5, but whether he makes a deal to fight Manny Pacquiao or anyone else, first he needs to be licensed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Before he will be issued a license for the year, Mayweather has been ordered to appear before the commission for a hearing at its Feb. 1 meeting in Las Vegas.

His appearance is the 20th and final item on the agenda, which the commission released on Thursday.

Before deciding whether it will license Mayweather, the commission wants him to answer questions about the criminal case in which he recently made a plea deal.

Mayweather faces an 87-day jail sentence at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas after a plea deal on domestic violence charges related to a September 2010 incident with his ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of three of his children.

Mayweather was supposed to begin his sentence Jan. 6, but the judge in the case, Melissa Saragosa, deferred his report date to June 1 after his attorney, Richard Wright, successfully argued that he should be allowed to fight May 5 in order to honor an existing deal with the MGM Grand and because a Mayweather fight would inject $100 million into the ailing Las Vegas economy.

However, the five-member commission, as it has often done with applicants before granting licenses, still wants Mayweather to answer questions about the case before the panel votes on his application.
