Ever since the Twitter rumor about San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera’s performance-enhancing drug suspension turned out to be true, such rumors are no longer ignored or brushed aside.

So when New York Yankee second baseman Robinson Cano was the subject of a Twitter rumor that he would be the next player to be suspended for PED use, it became a story. And like Cabrera before him, Cano denied there is any truth to the rumor.

“Not at all,” Cano told the New York Daily News on Thursday. “There’s no test or anything.”

Cano’s agent, Scott Boras, said in a text message that there is no truth to the rumor and that he hasn’t heard anything about Cano failing a drug test.

Boras also told the Daily News that his office traced the origin of the rumor to the Dominican Republic, Cano’s home country, a reporter in this country and another agent who has been saying a prominent Latin player was in the midst of the appeal process.

Team and league sources also told the Daily News the rumors were baseless.

“You can’t control what people say,” Cano told the newspaper. “There’s a lot of negative stuff out there and I can’t control that. I have to stay above that. There’s been the same thing for a long time. It’s something I can’t control.”

Cano has a close relationship with Cabrera and he became a target for rumors shortly after it was announced in August that Cabrera tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone. The appeal process can take months sometimes, so if Cano really did test positive and is in line for a suspension, it would not have to be made public yet and the Yankees might not know about it.

At this point, we have to take Cano’s word and assume he is telling the truth, much like we did with Cabrera when he denied rumors about him testing positive weeks before his 50-game suspension was announced.

But we also shouldn’t be surprised if Cano ends up being hit with a suspension at some point before this season ends or during the offseason, because in this day and age nobody is above suspicion.
