A rapper has never won a grammy for song or record of the year, but this year marks a major high for hip hop. Both album of the year and best new artist feature two rap artists. Jay-Z is up for two awards this year, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, as well as Kendrick Lamar, are nominated for 7 awards each, including: best new artist. Here’s what Macklemore had to say about his Grammy nomination:

“I think that we made a great album that pushed the genre of hip-hop. I think that hip-hop can be at times resistant to change and when you see two white dudes from Seattle, Washington, rapping about gay marriage, it’s like, ‘Hold up, this isn’t hip-hop,’ when in actuality it is. Hip-hop has always been about expansion, about pushing the genre, about challenging the listener.”

If the nominations were not enough, a hip hop legend will be front and center on the stage for the Grammys. LL Cool J will be hosting the award show, another win for hip hop!
