It’s a little hard to believe that just a couple years ago the Denver Nuggets were a 50+ win team with the Coach of the Year.  Since then they’ve fired George Karl, hired Brian Shaw, fallen deep in the Western Conference and somewhat gutted their roster.  With a 20-39 record and the 13th spot in the Western Conference, it’s obvious that the Nuggets will not make the playoffs this year.  The players clearly know that and decided to ditch all efforts; in fact they’ve publicly chanted their countdown till the end of the season.

A fourth-quarter huddle late in the Nuggets’ 104-82 loss to the Utah Jazz on Friday broke with this phrase: “1-2-3 … six weeks!”

As in six weeks to go until the end of the season. That’s 24 games, 46 days and 1,152 minutes away.

Tax day, April 15, is getaway day: the last day of the Nuggets’ season. Rest assured, there are players who are already counting.

And if by now you’ve already connected the dots to the similarity with Nick Van Exel’s infamous “1-2-3 … Cancun!” in 1998, you win the Showcase Showdown.

There were high hopes for Brian Shaw as an NBA head coach but so far he’s had quite the rocky start in his two seasons with the Nuggets.
