Empire’s Jussie Smollett Opens Up To Ellen About His Sexuality

One of the new hit television series is, Empire. While most of the viewers were pulled in by its music, the majority has stayed thanks to the drama and real-life topics discussed on the show. Topics such as mental disease, family troubles and homosexuality.

Jussie Smollett a.k.a. Jamal, whom since the show has signed a record deal, was outed by co-star Malik Yoba on his sexual preference. “I know Jussie, he is gay, and he’s very committed to issues around the LGBT community,” Yoba said during an interview with BlackFilm.com. Since the news, Smollett has spoken on his own sexuality – with our favorite gay talk show host, Ellen DeGeneras.

Empire‘s Jussie Smollett opens up to Ellen about his sexuality. “What you’ve done within the LGBT community is very much, in my opinion, is kind of like what Michael Jackson did for the black community,” Jussie mentions as he expresses his gratitude to Ellen. “You are who you are … it was really important to me to get across that there is no closet.” He wants it to be completely clear that he was not hiding his sexuality, he just wanted his personal life to remain personal. Got it! I still love this dude. His voice is amazing.

Lee Daniels, Empire’s creator is also homosexual. It was important for him to make this subject a part of the storyline. This is where Jamal and boyfriend, Michael comes in. During a test run of a kissed shared between the two, it showed that ratings would drop, but that didn’t stop Lee from leaving the scene in any way. “The ratings plummeted,” Washington Post entertainment reporter Cecilia Kang said. “They did not like that scene at all…[they’re aiming to] push buttons with this show.” I think they succeeded, and won.
