UPDATE: Floyd Mayweather arrested!

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been arrested in Las Vegas on a felony theft charge stemming from a domestic violence complaint by his ex-girlfriend. Mayweather, 33, was booked Friday on a grand larceny charge at the Clark County jail and held on $3,000 bail, Las Vegas police Officer Bill Cassell said. Mayweather’s lawyer, Richard Wright, said Mayweather is accused of taking an iPhone from Josie Harris, his ex-girlfriend and mother of three of his children. “He surrendered,” Wright said, denying the allegations against Mayweather. “He did not commit any grand larceny,” Wright told The Associated Press. “Josie can’t find her iPhone. We’re attempting to find it or replace it. We’ll cooperate in the investigation. We expect to get the matter resolved.” Harris made a police complaint and sought a Family Court protection order Thursday alleging Mayweather pulled her hair, punched her in the head and twisted her arm while she screamed for their children, ranging in age from 7 to almost 11, to call 911. Police said Thursday that Harris was treated at a Las Vegas hospital for minor injuries. “Please order Floyd Mayweather to not try and contact me,” Harris wrote in an application for a protection order that said the couple separated in May after living together for seven years. “Floyd has threatened to have other people do harm to me as well and if (there) is a way I can be protected from that please help me,” the document says.

No deal made to halt Quran burning on 9/11

A Florida Muslim leader is disputing claims by the Rev. Terry Jones that he brokered a deal to get the Islamic center project near New York’s ground zero moved if the pastor called off his Quran burning event. Imam Muhammad Musri said Jones may have hatched the story about the Islamic center moving to “give himself a reason to call this off.  Musri said he did not tell Jones that the Islamic center project would be moved away from ground zero.  ‘He’s accusing me of lying to him, which I did not. I was very explicit with him.” said Musri, who is with the Islamic Society of Central Florida. The disagreement between the two religious figures is the latest twist in the saga about the proposed Quran burning event. President Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday urged Jones to call off the Saturday event, timed for the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Obama called the plan by Jones to burn the Qurans on Saturday a “recruitment bonanza for al Qaeda.” Jones said he would call off the event but then seemed to be changing his mind later Thursday. During the afternoon, Jones said he canceled his plan to burn copies of the Quran, based on what he said were assurances that the Islamic center in New York would be moved.  Stay tuned…

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Suspect in Domestic Violence.

TMZ has learned … Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a suspect in a battery domestic violence case. Multiple cop cars from the Las Vegas Metro Police Department showed up at Mayweather’s home early this morning.  We’re told cops received a call at 5:03 AM from Floyd’s baby mama, Josie Harris, who claimed the boxer attacked her. Sources tell TMZ Harris went to Southern Hills Hospital in Las Vegas at some point after the incident and has now left. Law enforcement sources say police were unable to find Floyd and are now looking to interview him. Cops want to speak to Floyd before determining if they will arrest him. We’re told Harris is going to court today to get a restraining order against Mayweather. In 2003 Harris accused Mayweather of punching and kicking her inside a Bentley in Vegas.  Charges were filed but dismissed in 2005 after Harris testified she lied to cops because she was angry that Floyd had left her for another woman.

Ron Artest pulled over in a race car. I love the way this guy moves!!! – Funk Flex

Lakers forward Ron Artest just earned a new nickname: Speed Racer. In a post reported by TMZ, Artest was pulled over Monday in an Eagle Roadster — an open-wheel Indy car — because the registration on the car expired. In an interesting twist, TMZ says the car isn’t even registered to Artest, but to a person in Tennessee. There’s no use trying to explain this — just laugh. It’s Ron Artest after all. The above photo reminds me of a scene in Liar Liar, a movie that features a hot-shot lawyer (Jim Carrey) who’s incapable of lying for a day after his son makes it his birthday wish. After Carrey is pulled over for running various stop signs and red lights and for speeding, an officer asks him, “Do you know why I pulled you over?” Carrey responds, “It depends how long you’ve been following me.” As for Artest, I can’t help but laugh when I see his innocent-looking grin as the officer is questioning him. Maybe he was just giving Artest props for wearing his helmet! The best caption to this photo will be featured in a morning links post. — Mark Medina

Reggie Bush says the Heisman matter is “outta my hands”

Reggie Bush says whether he is stripped of his Heisman trophy is out of his hands and that his play on the field in college speaks for itself. Bush says he hasn’t even thought about whether he’d actually return the trophy if asked and stresses that his focus is on the New Orleans Saints’ season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night. The NCAA found major violations in USC’s football program and levied serious sanctions against the school in June. The Trojans have dissociated themselves completely from Bush. —Sabrina B.
