NCAA sued for violating anti-trust laws

The NCAA was sued in federal court this week in a case that seeks to overturn the association’s policy of putting one-year limits on athletic scholarships. The antitrust suit was filed in California on behalf of former Rice football player Joseph Agnew who had lost his scholarship after having surgery even though he played in all 13 games of the season. Money Allegedly Sought in Recruiting of Auburn QB

The NCAA is reviewing the situation as a man allegedly tried to secure a payment from Mississippi State during the recruitment of Tigers quarterback and Heisman Trophy hopeful, Cam Newton. Former Mississippi State player John Bond has said an ex-teammate was soliciting payment during Newton’s recruitment by that school last season. “He told me that Cam Newton wanted to play at Mississippi State, but that a specified payment would have to be made,” Bond said in a statement on Thursday. Newton’s father, Cecil, has denied the allegations against his son and hired a lawyer, whom he declined to identify. He said he is cooperating with the NCAA in the matter. Texas Longhorn TV & Hyperdunks!!

ESPN says its pursuing a deal with the University of Texas to distribute the school’s proposed Longhorn Network on cable television. ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said Friday the network and university are “in discussions” but would not comment on how much the deal would be worth. Texas has been considering launching its own network for several months and it was one of the reasons the school chose to stay in the Big 12 rather than accept an offer to join the Pac-10. @wendyKlucas


Notre Dame Responsible in Student Death

Following the death of Declan Sullivan, 20, a student videographer for Notre Dame who was killed when a hydraulic lift he was on toppled over while he was filming football practice, the president of the University of Notre Dame sent an e-mail to students, faculty, staff and alumni Friday saying that the school is responsible for a the death because it failed to protect him. “This loss is more devastating, for Declan died in a tragic accident while in our care,” he wrote. “For that, I am profoundly sorry.” Read more after the jump…
