Never come between a man and his dog. Especially if that man is 72-year-old Gary Murphy of Palm City.

The retired construction worker was repairing a latch on his father-in-law’s boat on Thursday when he ended up saving his dog from the jaws of an alligator instead, reports TCPalm.com.

“I wasn’t trying to be a hero,” he told the paper. “I just wanted my dog back.”

Murphy was working in a marshy area Thursday when he heard a yelp from his 11-year-old West Highland White terrier and saw the dog had been snatched by an alligator.

He jumped onto the gator’s back, something he said was like “landing on a pile of rocks.”

Murphy hit the gator on the back of the head with his loafers until it let go of the dog, and then both man and canine beat a hasty retreat.

The dog, whom Murphy refers to as his “furry little white boy,” suffered a compressed lung and puncture wounds across his back and belly, but will survive, according to TCPalm.

Murphy, who credited love, a healthy lifestyle, and background in construction for his ability to fend off the alligator, shrugged off a decision his wife called “nuts.”

“If your kid was in the water with its head in a gator’s mouth,” he asked, “what would you do?”
