Told he would not be able to arrive at Friday’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame induction in a colorful float, former Bulls and Pistons star Dennis Rodman will instead appear …via helicopter with acrobats performing.
Speaking to the Miami Herald, Rodman added “a couple of my outfits will be ‘out there.’ Whatever might be too zany is not too zany.”
He said the float idea was quashed because the city would not let him close off the streets at Springfield, Mass.
Rodman, 50, will be the headline inductee on Friday, along with two-time Olympic gold medalist Chris Mullin. They will be joined in the Hall by Tex Winter, Artis Gilmore, Arvydas Sabonis, Tara VanDerveer, Teresa Edwards, Herb Magee, Tom “Satch” Sanders and Reece “Goose” Tatum.
Rodman played on five NBA championship teams — two with the Pistons and three with the Bulls — and led the NBA in rebounds per game for seven straight seasons, making the all-defensive first team seven times and being named defensive player of the year twice.
Off the court, Rodman crossed over from the sports pages to the entertainment gossip columns, FOX Sports Detroit reported.
His body was a living mural of tattoos, body piercings and hair colorings. He once was linked romantically with Madonna and had a brief marriage to Carmen Electra. And he showed up wearing a wedding dress for the promotion of his autobiography “Bad as I Wanna Be” in Manhattan.
