Cops were questioning 31-year-old Amit Patel, of Edison, N.J., when he suddenly jumped into the lake about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Patel was pulled from the dark, murky water 45 minutes later.

He was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in “extremely critical condition” and pronounced dead at about 9:30 p.m., authorities told the Sun-Times.

Before Patel leapt to his death, he was hanging out inside a park that was being cleared out by cops because it had closed.

The officers had just asked for Patel’s name when he plunged into the lake, sources told the Sun-Times.

Investigators were handling the case as a suicide, a police spokesman told the Chicago Tribune.

An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Patel’s death is scheduled for Thursday.
