Google is reportedly working on a solution that will boost the capabilities of Voice Actions on Android smartphones and compete head-to-head with Apple’s digital assistant, Siri. The product, currently code-named “Majel,” could launch by the end of this year, AndroidandMe reported recently. Much like Siri, Majel will let Android users issue queries using conversational speech instead of having to use one of a few compatible commands. The initial release will not allow users to control the phone or any installed applications according to the report, but those functions may launch next year. While Majel may just be a rumor for now, it seems apparent that Google is planning some sort of Siri competitor. On Tuesday, the company announced that it has purchased Clever Sense, the developer behind the personal assistant software “Alfred.” It’s unclear if Alfred, which is similar to Siri, will be tied into the initial Majel launch, however. Android phone owners who want a taste of Siri-like functionality in the meantime can check out Cluzee or Iris, two third-party assistant apps available now in the Android market.
