A police chief is being accused of First Amendment censorship abuse after ordering an sergeant to a reporter’s home when he didn’t like his news report.

Berkeley Police Chief Michael Meehan apologized Friday for the 12:45 am knock on California reporter Doug Oakley’s door by an armed officer asking him to change his story.

‘I would say it was an overzealous attempt to make sure that accurate information is put out,’ said Mr Meehan to the Oakland Tribune.

Mr Oakley, a reporter throughout the Bay Area, said he initially was frightened by the sergeant’s midnight arrival that awoke him in bed, fearing something terribly wrong had happened or a relative had died.
