Television watchers are increasingly turning to tablets for their viewing pleasure.

A study released this week by media giant Viacom found that tablet computers led by the iPad have overtaken desktops and laptops as the second-most popular television viewing device, following the TV.

Beyond funny cat clips on YouTube, the survey of 2,500 tablet owners ages 8 to 54 found the handheld devices are quickly gaining acceptance for watching full-length shows, while fewer people are watching TV on smartphones.

The “Tapping into Tabletomics” report also looked at show preferences, finding that tablet and computer TV watchers favor comedies, music and news. Reality, drama, sci-fi and sports fans were more likely to reach for the remote.

Researchers reported that tablet users also have deep emotional connections to their devices, with more than half saying their tablets make them “feel happier and more relaxed.” Forty percent agreed with the statement that “my tablet brings out the best in me.”

Many also reported using their tablets while watching a television, either to multitask or use apps designed as add-ons for television shows.

“Co-viewing apps [supplementing the TV show] create more meaningful ways to reach them and represent an entirely new level of engagement for fans of our content,” said Colleen Fahey Rush, executive vice president of Viacom Media Networks.

Not surprisingly, people who use streaming services like Netflix, Apple TV and AirPlay, were the most likely to use a tablet to watch full-length shows. But despite the trend, respondents said the television continues to offer the best experience on everything from sound quality to overall ease of use.

Nearly 120 million tablets are expected to be sold this year.
