An 11-year-old upstate New York girl was charged with two felonies for allegedly brutalizing her foster mother’s puppy to death with her bare hands.
The reason?
She didn’t get her way, State Police said Tuesday.
The Saratoga girl was reportedly staying at an overnight foster home in Lake George on Sunday, when she asked the woman for a ride.
“The foster mother said no,” Trooper Mark Cepiel told the Albany Times-Union. “Later on, the girl caused injuries to the dog and the dog died.”
The girl is accused of slamming the 13-week-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel against a floor and bed post until it died, the Post-Star of Glen Falls reported.
Police charged her with aggravated cruelty to animals and criminal mischief, which relates to the dog belonging to another person and having a value of more than $1,500.
The case is being handled in Warren County Family Court because of her age.
The Warren County Probation Department could put the girl in a diversion program or decide to have the case prosecuted in court, the Post-Star said.
Cathy Cloutier, executive director of the SPCA of Upstate New York, told YNN Hudson Valley that it’s rare to see such a brutal act involve someone so young.
“This is definitely a violent case,” Cloutier said. “The correlation between domestic violence and animal abuse is a known fact.”
A 2001 FBI report on youth violence found that the harming or killing of animals can serve as a “red flag” for identifying a child’s potential for violent behavior with other people — or shed light on the child’s personal victimization.
In the 11-year-old’s case, “we can’t lose fact that this child really needs some major, serious help before other victims are in her line,” Cloutier told YNN.
The Warren County Attorney’s office declined to comment about the case.
