Anthony Hopkins told the Huffington Post “People go out of their way to flatter the nominating body and I think it’s kind of disgusting. That’s always been against my nature.” Joaqin Phoenix added “I think it’s total, utter bulls–t, and I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t believe in it. It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot. It’s totally subjective. Pitting people against each other … It’s the stupidest thing in the whole world.”
Phoenix is nominated for his role in the Master for the 2013 Oscars. Ethan Hawke clarified his statements about the awards saying that they do a great job of recognizing some of the great works produced in a given year but the sometimes are awarded for less than memorable performances and there is a bit of politics that come into play.
