Joseph Keene a 34 year old, Long Island native was caught making fake 911 calls, causing those who worked with him to leave and respond to them. He doesn’t stop there, while the men were out on the calls, the firefighter decided to steal from his colleagues as well. The calls that Keene placed range from reports of gas odor complaints to transformers supposedly sparking. Keene found opportunity when the men left to do their job and re-entered the stations in which they worked at, stations that are within the Staten Island region as well as Queens. The unethical fire fighter, stole up to $200 on one occasion, $500 another and his biggest theft was $1,200 in cash at the firehouse on Union Turnpike. He was finally caught when investigators had traced the phone calls to a cell phone that was under his name. Keene made an income of over 70,000 per year and is being charged with “felony charges of falsely reporting an incident, grand larceny and burglary as well as a petty larceny charge”.
