Spike Lee reached out to those who support him and independent films asking for a donation for the funding of his new project, a movie on “blood-addicted humans”. 25 days after starting his campaign for help on the funding of the project, the renown director reached his starting goal of $1.25 million to begin the project.
The director received much backlash from many when he took to the internet and asked for outside help in the funding of the project titled “Red Hook Summer”. Yet Spike Lee responded with none other than his witty logic, expressing that he has asked for help funding for his projects before, but now he reached out in the most modern form, the internet. Spike Lee stated:
“Social media was writing letters, making phone calls, shaking hands.” He said that while shooting “Malcolm X” the money ran out and he enlisted the help of friends Tracy Chapman, Bill Cosby, Prince, Oprah Winfrey and others to help him finish financing the film”.
