Sharon police have began clearing their station to renovate and remove clutter. While in the process, the Pennsylvaina department came across a Tommy Gun purchased in the 1930’s to kill outlaw, John Dillinger. Hit the jump for more info.

According to the Sharon Herald, “The legend is that Dillinger was robbing banks in this area in the 1930s. … the Tommy gun was bought for the department by McDowell Bank, but I don’t know if anybody could confirm that. The story goes that all the banks were worried about being robbed and they knew Dillinger had a Tommy gun so they wanted to level the playing field.”

Eventually, before the banks of Sharon had to, Dillinger was killed in another incident. As time went by, the station tried to sell it to museums, but the gun still fires, which caused the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to block any possible sale of the .45 caliber weapon. Police Chief Mike Menster stated [that] “It was bought for law enforcement use and they told us in a letter that it could only be used for law enforcement or sold in parts.”
