PATRICK DEMPSEY

The devoted fans of Grey’s Anatomy were in for the shock of their lives when Dr. McDreamy, a.k.a Dr. Derek Shepherd died in last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Fans never expected the queen of ABC, Shonda Rimes, to kill off such an essential character.

When the heartthrob, Dr.Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) , pulls over to help the victims of a car crash, his own car was hit and later died in the hospital after his injuries were not cared for properly. His character was married to character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and they had two children together.

Shonda Rimes released a statement on her feelings about writing off Dempsey’s character,

“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character – for Meredith, for me and for the fans,” Rhimes continued, “I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘Mcdreamy.’ Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example – happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true – of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all.”

Dempsey is content with the way things played out for him and his character. Grey’s made him a star and he said,”It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be. Which was pretty good. I like the way it has all played out,” he said. “Things happened very quickly, where we were like, ‘Oh this is where it’s going to go.’ It just sort of unfolded in a very organic way. I don’t remember the date … Maybe February or March.”

Although he is still dealing with the emotional side of leaving a show he’s been a part of for eleven seasons, he does have a few projects that he is already working on. Two small-screen projects, one drama, one thriller, “The Limit” and “Fodors,” as well as taking the “rest of the year off to develop.”

He said, “I would like to be a producer. I would commit to a show that is 10 to 12 episodes. But 24 [episodes] again, I don’t know if I would do that. It’s a very hard life. It’s financially rewarding but there comes a point where how much is enough, really?”

When he’s not working on these projects he will be spending time at home with his kids, where he said his focus lies with, “being a father to my children,” one daughter, Talula, and twin boys, Sullivan and Darby.
