The family of Freddie Gray will gain $6.4 million for a settlement in a civil case for his wrongful death – Gray passed away on April 19th due to severe spinal cord injuries obtained while in police custody. The Baltimore board that handles all of the city’s spending are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to approve of the amount.

“The proposed settlement agreement going before the board of estimates should not be interpreted as a judgment on the guilt or innocence of the officers facing trial,” Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in a news release. “This settlement is being proposed solely because it is in the best interest of the city, and avoids costly and protracted litigation that would only make it more difficult for our city to heal and potentially cost taxpayers many millions more in damages.”

Although the family will be ‘paid off’ Baltimore officials would like to make it clear that the settlement does not mean that they, nor the police department and officers being charged with except guilt for the young man’s death. The $6.4 million also has nothing to do with the criminal aspect of proceedings in the case.

While there is no price on a person’s life, this is only the right move to make. Gray’s death has been one of the most publicized cases during the war on the overbearing police officers’ movement. If this was a type of settlement that took place whenever an officer took things too far – as far as a person’s LIFE goes – I bet these cities would re-think the hiring process. The pockets being hit, hurts.
