Family members, world leaders, celebrities and royalty all attended Nelson Mandela’s funeral to say their last goodbyes. The emotional funeral took place in Mandela’s childhood town of Qunu, South Africa. His coffin sat in front of a crowd of 4,500 people and 95 candles burned on a dais to honor his 95 years of life. Nelson Mandela’s memorial took place today and many of the world leaders attended. Our own President, Barack Obama spoke, and named Mandela, “…a giant of history.” The Memorial took place at Johannesburg’s FNB stadium, where South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma, Cuba’s President Raul Castro, thousands of South Africans, celebrities and many more, showed up in the pouring rain to celebrate the life of Mr. Mandela. The grief sticken family of Nelson Mandela has released their first statement since his death. A spokesman for the Mandela family, Lt. Gen. Temba Templeton Matanzima, read the message in South Africa. People in South Africa are preparing for the national day of prayer today and reflect over the former president’s life.
