It occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday outside Greater Centennial AME Zion Church in Mount Vernon.

A day-camp children’s program had just wrapped up when the woman left the church, according to witnesses. A man approached the woman and stabbed her in the shoulder in front of choir members and children. He then fled.

The woman was immediately taken to the clinic inside the church, where nurses treated her before she was transported to the hospital.

Lawrence Davis, a maintenance technician at the church, told the Lo Hud Journal he believed the woman knew her attacker.

The woman was reported to be in stable condition.

Mount Vernon Police said Thursday they were continuing to investigate. They had not identified a suspect.
