Bridget Wismer was arrested on Saturday in Brookside Park, authorities said Tuesday. John Gavaghan was charged the same day in Philadelphia, where police there found the month-old baby boy.

“You can’t sell a baby in Delaware,” said Cpl. John Welgarz with the New Castle County Police, according to CBS 3 News in Philadelphia. “There are different ways you go about it, if you don’t want your child.”

The baby, who was born in August, was found in good condition, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The child is expected to be placed in a foster home.

Wismer denies the charges.

“I didn’t want to give my baby away,” the 33-year-old told CBS 3 News.

“(Gavaghan) told me he would help out,” Wismer said. “Whenever I needed something for the baby, I would call him. There was no organized thing.”

Authorities were made aware of the scheme to sell the newborn in September, after a call from a family member of Wismer’s, The News Journal reported.

The woman’s grandmother called police and told them Wismer was trying to “sell her newborn son to a homosexual couple for $15,000 because she did not want the child,” court papers said.

The investigation revealed that Wismer did make arrangements to sell the newborn, but to 54-year-old Gavaghan, police said.

Gavaghan is listed as the child’s biological father on the birth certificate, the News Journal reported. However, police said Gavaghan was not the boy’s father. “They didn’t even have a relationship,” Welgarz said. “They met through mutual friends.”

Wismer and Gavaghan were charged with dealing in children and second-degree conspiracy. Both have been released on bail.
