The six-member class includes running back Curtis Martin, defensive end Chris Doleman, defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy, offensive tackle William Roaf, center Dermontti Dawson and cornerback Jack ButlerJack Butler.

The Class of 2012 will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 4.  The 44-member selection committee met for 7 hours and 36 minutes to whittle the 17 finalists, including the senior nominees, to the six-member class.

Martin (14,101 yards), who played for New England and the New York Jets, and Barry Sanders are the only backs to begin their careers with 10 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

“It’s one of the most humbling experiences I’ve ever had,” Martin said. “I feel tremendously grateful to my players and coaches.  It’s bittersweet, though, because of coach Parcells. Without him, my career wouldn’t have been 30 percent of what it was.”

Parcells, who made the cut to 10 but failed to make it to five, drafted Martin when he was New England’s head coach. When Parcells was hired by the New York Jets, he traded for Martin.

Martin said he would ask Parcells to be his presenter when he’s enshrined in Canton, Ohio.

Doleman registered at least 10 sacks in eight seasons. When he retired, he ranked fourth on the league’s career list.

Kennedy was voted NFL Defensive Player of the Year on a 2-14 team. He’s one of the greatest two-gap players in history.

Roaf, the epitome of what coaches want in a left tackle, was voted to 11 Pro Bowls in his 13-year career with New Orleans and Kansas City.

Dawson is the second Pittsburgh Steelers center to be voted into the Hall of Fame. He was voted to seven consecutive Pro Bowls.

Butler played for the Steelers for nine years. When he retired after the 1959 season, he had 52 interceptions, second in history at the time of his retirement. He had at least seven interceptions in four different seasons.

In the reduction from 15 modern-era finalists to 10, owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr., running back Jermoe Bettis, guard Will Shields, receiver Tim Brown and outside linebacker Kevin Greene didn’t survive the cut.

Eliminated on the reduction from 10 to five were Parcells, receiver Cris Carter, receiver Andre Reed, defensive end Charles Haley and cornerback Aeneas Williams.
