I love stories like this…Miami won its third game in three nights 105-90 (with their best start in team history), but at that point the ever-aware James had his eyes trained somewhere else.

In the section to the right and above the basket at Bankers Life Fieldhouse a young fan had created a sign asking James to be her Valentine. It was scattered amongst other signs both in support and in spite of the superstar, but staring at the stands from the bench something stood out.

“I have good eyes,” said James of the sign-which he said he was not told about but rather found on his own in the fourth quarter. “It said ‘Will I be her Valentine’.”

James accepted, pulling his shoes to his lap and grabbing a pen from the trainer. As the final minutes ticked down he signed the red-and-black sneakers and tied the laces together and waited patiently for the game to end.

Meanwhile he pointed at nine-year old Taylor Sturgill of Cincinnati and instructed security to have her brought to court level. When the final horn sounded, James headed out of the tunnel where he met Sturgill-who was donning his number six jersey.

As if awarding her a medal, Lebron took the shoes and placed it over her shoulders.

“That was special,” said James of Sturgill’s gesture. “I’d seen her cheering, jumping up and down.”

Following the presentation, the young fan stood in the the tunnel with smiling with a bit of a shocked look as well. At the insistence of James, security remained with the Sturgill until her parents arrived to pick her up and check out the new prize.

“I was the lucky one tonight,” said James of giving away the shoes-though on this Valentine’s Day one nine-year old from Ohio might disagree.
