The deranged wife of a rookie cop fatally gassed their 5-year-old son and infant daughter before a botched suicide try in their Bronx apartment, police sources said Friday.

A confessional note from Lisette Bamenga, found near the two tiny bodies, said the children would be in “a better place” after their deaths, a police source said.

Bamenga tried sealing the windows of the ninth-floor Nobel Ave. home with plastic and tape before turning on the burners of her gas stove, according to the source.

She forced the children to drink toxic windshield wiper fluid, and slashed her wrists in a failed attempt to kill herself, the source said.

“We don’t know what happened,” Robert Mpeke, 48, the woman’s brother, said as her family gathered at the building. “It’s just very hard.”

The tragedy brought a grief-stricken woman to her knees outside the building.

An upstairs tenant in the building called 911 just before midnight Thursday to report a gas leak.

First responders arrived at 11:53 p.m. to find a gruesome sight inside apartment 9N: The unresponsive Trevor Noel Jr. and his 4-month-old sibling Lillian lying on the floor inside the southeast Bronx home.

EMS workers tried desperately to revive the infant girl and the little boy, nicknamed “Boogie,” before both were pronounced dead at the scene.

“I saw the baby outside the building,” neighbor Randy Marcado, 44, told the Daily News. “Legs were moving a little bit. They were giving the baby CPR.”

First-year NYPD Officer Trevor Noel, assigned to the 28th Precinct in uptown Manhattan, returned from his night shift to find the children dead and his apartment — now a crime scene.

The devastated dad dissolved into tears at the news. The couple moved into the apartment just two months ago; one source indicated they had argued in the days before the tragedy.

Both the children were pronounced dead at the scene by an EMS crew.

Hours later, his wife’s family wept outside the building as NYPD investigators hauled out bags of evidence.

The 29-year-old Bamenga was alive, with just minor cuts on her wrists, and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx for treatment, police said. She was listed in stable condition.

No charges were filed by police in the deaths.

Bamenga “wasn’t very talkative,” said neighbor Vickie Montalvo. “She kept to herself. … It’s a tragedy. I’m trying to understand it, because there’s children involved.”

The mom’s Facebook page indicated she is originally from Paris, and is a rabid soccer fan whose favorite player was Frenchman Thierry Henry.

A man who lives beneath the death apartment said he heard strange noises coming from above him Thursday night.

“They are usually very quiet,” said the man, who declined to give his name. “I heard loud banging. Three loud bangs, like someone was dropping something heavy on the ground.”

The thumps were followed by an eerie silence.
