It’s July, which means the city has released its annual list of upcoming city job exams.
That’s good news if you are interested in applying for a civil service job with the city of New York.
The list is extensive and includes everything from police officer and traffic enforcement agent to clerk and mechanical engineer.
But there are a few things to keep in mind before you start job hunting.
Most positions require applicants to take an exam as well as provide educational and work-related experience. Make sure you read the notice of exam carefully and save all your paperwork.
Many of the tests can now be taken at the computerized testing centers.
And you will probably have to pay a fee to take a test, although military veterans can request a waiver.
Most importantly, remember that it can be a slow process from application to exam to list to hiring.
The city seems to have a perpetual hiring freeze that is lifted for public safety positions. But there are other vital positions that need to be replaced.
Once you make a list, there is no guarantee you will be hired.
Here are a few of the exam applications with upcoming filing deadlines:
l Caseworkers: Filing has started and continues until October. There are multiple tests given throughout the year for this position.
According to the notice, caseworkers provide social services to clients/patients, such as recipients of public assistance, food stamps, and/or medical assistance. The job may also include working with homeless adults and families.
Caseworkers may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays. The current minimum salary is $34,977.
l Motor Vehicle Operators: This job involves driving a variety of vehicles including cars, ambulettes, vans, trucks, forklifts, wreckers and hearses.
While there are no formal education or experience requirements, you must have a driver’s license. You could be disqualified for a poor driving record including accidents, violations and suspensions.
The current minimum salary is $33,695.
The application period has also started for environmental police officer, job opportunity specialist, correction officer, school safety agent and several other positions.
Later this year, applications will start for a number of other jobs including dietitian, fire alarm dispatcher, urban park ranger and auto mechanic.
