President Jimmy Carter

Paula Deen has gained an interest supporter, a former president of the United States. President Jimmy Carter has spoken out about the whole Deen incident saying that “there’s no condoning the use of a word that abuses other people” but that she should eventually be forgiven. I know a lot of people who believe that Deen should be forgiven since her words were said 30 years ago and she admitted to using the racial slur. The chef has since been dropped from The Food Network, Target, Walmart, Home Depot, QVC, Sears, and K-Mart but her book sales have increased by 1,000% so clearly she still has fans. Some people may eventually forgive Deen, but I don’t think that will happen anytime soon. Read what President Carter had to say below.

President Carter told CNN, “She was maybe excessively honest in saying that she had in the past, 30 years ago, used this terrible word. I think she has been punished, perhaps overly severely, for her honesty in admitting it and for the use of the word in the distant past. She’s apologized profusely.”

He went on to say that he and probably Deen come from a time in the South when the n-word was “quite frequently” used. He also spoke about the programs that Deen has in Georgia that help “almost exclusively oppressed and poverty stricken black people.”
