Being diagnosed with any illness is a struggle; awareness, health changes, etc., but it’s even more difficult when you have to create these changes when you are only a child. Usher understands these difficulties as his seven-year-old son, Usher Raymond V, also known as Cinco, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
During a chat with PEOPLE at the JDRF‘s Promise Ball, which raises awareness and money for research and a cure, Usher opens up about his son’s type 1 diabetes diagnosis one year ago.
“A child that every day has to prick himself and has to be cautious of what he eats and also to carry this disorder around — that really is the type of bravery that we all aspire to have,” says the R&B crooner.

Usher says, while it is a huge change for his son, it is just as much as a trying change for him as well, as a father.
“There’s been some difficult moments. I have a great deal of understanding of what people have to deal with. It’s personal,” he says. “I want to be supportive not only as someone who’s vying for a cure, but also as a father who has a child who’s experienced a lot of highs and lows.”

USHER UR A WONDERFUL MAN AND FARTHER MAY GID CONTINUE TO BE WITH U AND UR SON WIT HIS BATTLE THE FIGHT BELONGS TO GOD
COMPLETELY understand! My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 January 29 of this year; one month before her 2nd birthday. It has literally and figuratively been highs and lows battling this disease. It sucks being a kid having to deal with this, but it sucks for the parents as well. Naps and bedtimes are scary. Worrying and praying they don’t go too low, or even too high. Low blood sugar seizures/shock is scary. But it’s all in God’s hands. Prayers to Usher and his family, from one T1D parent to another!
Usher I know what you are going through. The difference is my son was DX’ed at age 23 with Type one. After a week in the CCU with DKA, we almost lost him. It was terribly frightening. Since he was an adult and a brittle diabetic we have had a lot to deal with. I would really love to invite you Usher to join my diabetes group. We have a little over 1,000 members and it’s a closed, private group. It is very loving and supportive. I really hope you will join us. You can gain a lot of helpful information. I will be praying for you and your family. The group is called Connected to Type One Diabetes.
Anyone else in need of support is invited to join as well! It’s called Connected to Type One Diabetes. It’s a closed, private group.
I understand this. I was diagnosed at age 7. It was tough for me. The mm my first daughter was diagnosed at15 months old. It’s a rough thing, but she handles it well. Hats off to the parents who do this. It gets tough, but we are tougher.
