Too Cold For Crime? NYC Has Murder-less Week

If you are from the New York area, you know how bitterly cold it has been around here lately. Every day for the past few days, people have braced the cold by bundling in numerous layers and even that isn’t helping many. It’s so cold, that people have been advised to stay indoors if it is possible and many have taken that advice including murderers. This past week NYC has had a completely murder-less week. From Wednesday to Wednesday, there has not been a reported homicide in the city. The last time NYC had a murder-less week was during Hurricane Sandy, in which surprisingly crime rates were down everywhere. The NYPD knows that the crime rate won’t always stay this long, but it’s certainly not a bad thing. Read more below.


Crime Is Up In New York City, Guess Who Bloomberg Blames

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is blaming Apple for the crime increase, saying that if it weren’t for a growth in theft of iPhones and iPads in New York City that crime would in fact be down. The Mayor cited an increase in thefts of the popular devices as the key thing raising the New York City Crime Index this year, but goes on to show that though crime is up, this has also been one historically one of the safest years for other reasons. Chicago Homicide Rate Reaches 500

The Chicago homicide rate has reached 500 deaths in 2012 after a fatal shooting on Thursday. The last time the city had this many homicides was back in ’08. Last year there was a record of 435 homicides throughout the city. On Thursday, a 40-year-old man was shot Austin neighborhood on the city’s West Side. Read more below. Julie A.
