Senate Close To An Agreement On Background Checks For Gun Sales

Gun control has been a major push for the Obama Administration since the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in December. Although the issue of gun control is a very debatable one, many do believe that there should be more of a background check involved in the purchase of gun sales. It shouldn’t take longer to get a driver’s license than it takes to legally obtain a firearm. I know background checks will not stop the sale of illegal guns, but most of the time people who commit mass shootings have purchased their weapons legally. The Senate has announces that they are close to an agreement that would expand background checks to all private firearm sales and with little to no-exception. Read more below.


CRAZY! Two Million People Could Lose Their Unemployment Benefits Just Days After Christmas

If the government doesn’t do something about the looming fiscal cliff, about two million people could lose their unemployment benefits just four days after Christmas. Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed is pushing to allow for another extension to avoid tax increases and spending cuts in January. Reed has been joined by others as President Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner continue to disagree with each other in regards to the deficit deal. Not only are 2.1 million facing losing their benefits on December 29th, but another million people could be losing their benefits in about three months if something is not done and soon. Federal Government To Take Legal Action Against Marijuana States

The federal government is threatening to take legal action against states in which marijuana has become “legal.” Colorado and Washington can face serious legal action that pretty much make lawmakers over-turn their decision to decriminalize weed. The news comes just days after a person was pictured sparking up right under the Space Needle in Seattle. Although both states may have made marijuana legal under state laws, it is still very illegal under the federal Controlled Substance Act. Read more below. Julie A.


President Obama To Stop Deporting Young Immigrants

The Obama Administration has announced their plans to stop deporting younger immigrants and instead start granting more work permits. About 800,000 people are expected to come forward to receive the work permits to avoid deportation. Read more below. Julie1205


U.S. Planning Troop Increase in Persian Gulf

American troops maybe withdrawn from Iraq, but U.S. officials don’t plan on withdrawing all of them from the area. The Obama administration  plans on increasing the amount of American troops in the Persian Gulf later this year. The repositioning of troops will allow the American military to keep a closer eye out on Iran and Iraq. The repositioning will also keep a combat team in Kuwait in case of a collapse of security in Iraq. American troops could remain in the Gulf until as last as 2014. Read more after the jump.
