Talib Kweli has for a long time been the face of underground hip hop. While given all the credit for his lyricism, he hasn’t been able to shake that Conscious-rapper identity. With his newest studio album Kweli looks to break free from his former association, in order to be appreciated properly. Kweli wants to be seen as an artist, and “Prisoner Of Consciousness” is his fifth solo studio album, it just might be the record that catapults him to mainstream with hits like “Come Here” featuring Miguel. The Miguel feature is one of shinning points but the album also contains work from Busta Rhymes, Kendrick Lamar, and Nelly. I expect great things from the Brooklyn emcee who has more than proven himself as far as I’m concerned. After sample clearance issues prevent the April 23rd release date it has been postponed until May 7th officially, and Talib says that’s it. Plenty, worldwide have passed judgement on Ross, because they are not fans, which is clearly the reason that Big or Em could get away with lyrics that offend. They are artists who not many disliked. Most people didn’t even pay attention to Ross’ line until it was pointed out by someone else. Killing, slanging dope, f***ing hoes is something you’ll bounce your head to until the artist that you don’t like says it.
