In a recent interview with VladTV, veteran rapper, Royce Da 5’9″ shared his experience in the game when it comes to ghostwriting. Ghostwriting has become a hot topic over the past year after Meek Mill called out Drake for using a reference track on last summer’s banger ‘RICO.’ Having written for some major artists in the past such as Puff Daddy and Dr. Dre, Royce Da 5’9″ was surprised at what he called a “lack of controversy” surrounding Meek Mill and Drake. “For me to look and see the way that everyone reacted to that, that was pretty fucking surprising,” he said adding, “When I first heard about it, I was like what? Drizzy not writing? Because he’s so fucking dope. But after looking back at it in retrospect, it’s a newer way of creating.” However, Royce did state that when it comes to ranking artists and lyricists ghostwriting does have to be taken into account. “The rules do have to change a little bit when you’re ranking these artists, where they stand as best lyricists… To me a lyricist is a writer,” he said. “You automatically can’t be a lyricist if you’re not writing everything.” More below.
