The beauty of music especially hip-hop is the sample. A producer takes a piece of musically history and adjusts it to their likely making more good music (in some cases). Well now you can find out the names of samples directly on your iPhone. Hit the jump to check out Who Sampled.

WhoSampled.com’s vast database has long been a source for music geeks to identify where their favorite samples came from, but now it’s coming to your smartphone too.

The WhoSampled iPhone app scans your music library and automatically shows you all the samples, covers and remixes associated with all of the artists and tracks in it. Plus, if you’re listening to a song and you want to access its data immediately, you can switch to the WhoSampled app from your music player and it’ll display all the musical connections for whatever’s playing.

You can compare two tracks side-by-side, listen to the original samples on YouTube, DailyMotion and SoundCloud, and skip directly to them with information about exactly how far through the song the sample is lifted from, the type of sample it is, and even the part of the song that’s being sampled. If you particularly like something, you can add it to a favorites list for future reference.

While WhoSampled’s database isn’t (and probably never could be) absolutely complete, it’s filled with 150,000 tracks from 54,000 artists, so you’ll find the majority of what you’re looking for reasonably easily. If you know there’s something missing, then you can help fill out the database by creating an account on WhoSampled.com.

The app is compatible with any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 4.2 or above, and it has an introductory price of 2 pounds ($3.15). What about other platforms? WhoSampled addresses that in a blog post, saying: “That’s all in our pipeline, but first we need to make the iPhone app a success.” In a tweet, the company added: “Android heads — we’re not forgetting you. Help us make the iPhone app a success by spreading the word and your version will come sooner!”
